I’m 17 years old, is there any reason why not to do weight training?

I recently bought "The truth about six pack abs", but the ebook includes a lot of weight training. I’ve been reluctant to try weights because I’ve heard their really bad for you back. Besides I was in a school trip a month ago and I saw a guy that used to do weight training and stopped, and his skin is all flabby and disgusting ,so if I start doing weights can I stop whenever I want? Or do I have to keep on doing weights?. I Also don’t want to look like a grotesque body builder. So what would you recommend?

PS I do Swimming 2 times a week 45 minutes.

You would need to grow a very large amount of muscle, and then loose it all for there to be major visible signs of stretch.

Weight training, when done correctly, is very safe and a great way to get stronger, fitter and healthier.

A lot of the e-books about weight training online are misleading – you will not get massive in 6 weeks no matter what you (legally) do. You will however increase quite rapidly in strength initially, and will grow new muscle, but at first your body will just become leaner as you lose body fat and gain muscle. Unless you intend to get massive it will not happen by accident – body builders train very hard and have a very specific combination of diet and supplementation that creates the optimal muslce growing metabolic state. A casual gym go-er will never become Arnie!

Weight training is not bad for your back when performed correctly. In fact weight training done correctly can strengthen your core and back muscles and protect your back. I am a woman that does weight training and I don’t look anything like a body builder (cycling is my primary sport and I use weight training to be stronger for cycling). Done correctly, it will actually help your swimming – Michael Phelps and top swimmers all lift weights (so do all the top cyclists). You only get that overbuilt look if you consistently lift very heavy weights, so don’t worry about it.

The only reason that guy got flabby is because he carried on with the same diet, and just stopped the exercise!

Weight training is fine at 17, it’s a good age to start. Just start off really easy until you’re 18+…then go for it. Good luck!
